Kessler > Composing the Exhibition > Installation Configurations

Europeans have known for decades that the installation configurations for an exhibition of paintings is an extremely significant matter. We Americans are slowly catching on. Most American painters still think all they need concern themselves with is the composition of a single painting.Come time to put up an exhibition most artists and gallerists approach the installation by simply selecting paintings and throwing them up on the wall with little regard for the concept that they are actually composing a symphony.Here are a few images of wall configurations I have developed for my forthcoming exhibition at Callan Contemporary in New Orleans. Well before I go to install the show I will generate many many of these potential wall configurations.

These images will then be printed out and referred to as the actual installation proceeds.In this way we will have the advantage of a plan but we will still improvise onsite.

With an emphasis on the unique in technique, materials and messages, Cheryl Hazan Contemporary Art offers large-scale works that speak to the need for downtown expansive loft spaces to be filled with intriguing, powerful art. Ms. Hazan’s next show, ROOTS, is based on her long-standing intimate involvement with artists and their work. “ROOTS expresses my curated look at collaboration. The show also reflects a point of view based on my travels and collaborations with other European galleries.” The exhibition will showcase paintings, sculpture, and works on paper by American artists Michael Kessler and Bruce Tolman, Turkish artist Ahmet Oran, and Columbian artist Eduardo Terranova, all curated and hung with the artistry that patrons of Cheryl Hazan Contemporary Art have come to crave. According to Ms. Hazan, this show’s global mix is a perfect complement to what will happen next in the gallery from December 13th – January 6th: the re-launch of ZONA, the iconic Soho lifestyle store known for inspired shopping and soul soothing browsing.

Here are images of new work recently completed in the Kessler studio. The focus here is to merge aspects of landscape with Neo-Modernest architectonic structures.

The thing to remember about Frank Lloyd Wright is that he not only designed magnificent structures but sought to integrate them with natural settings. In other words it was the placement of his structures within Nature that really makes it all work so well.

The title of the painting is Skywide (7) and it hangs in an important building called Soaring Wings in Austin, Texas where this scene will be shot.
